Are you actually Irish?
Yes! Emmet, our founder and the lead designer of Beyond the Woods, was born, raised, and currently lives in Ireland, and Old Oak Games is an Irish registered company. We work with writers, artists, and creatives from all over the world, but at its heart, Old Oak Games is Irish.

What is a Hexcrawl/West Marches game?
Hexcrawl or West Marches style games are a more old-school or classic form of tabletop RPG. Rather than the GM/DM driving the story, the players are the ones who choose where the adventure takes them. Games are usually played on a map with hexes (hence hexcrawl), with players starting in a relatively safe town or city and venturing out into the unknown to investigate rumours or seek out treasure. They tend to focus on exploration, discovery, and survival over combat (but there’s still plenty of that!).

How are you changing the 5e rules?
Beyond the Woods introduces new rules for exploration, survival, and carrying capacity to create a more challenging experience where the characters must plan and think things through before they act. We also have 6 brand new classes designed from the ground up to support an exploration and survival focused campaign. You can check out the changes we’ve made by downloading the free Quick Start.

Can I use the rules in my own campaign?
Yep! The Beyond the Woods Core Rulebook can be used to run a hexcrawl campaign in any setting — all you need is a map with hexes!

What version of 5e is this for?
Because Beyond the Woods introduces its own classes, species, and new rules, it will work with whichever version of 5e you prefer, whether it’s the 2014 edition, the updated 2024 rules, or another 5e variant, such as Tales of the Valiant.

Can I use Classes/Subclasses/Species for other 5e Books?
Beyond the Woods is designed to be played using the classes, subclasses, and lineages included in the Core Rulebook. If you want to use classes, subclasses, and species from other 5e books, we recommend that all players choose from the same pool, i.e. everyone chooses a class from the Beyond the Woods Core Rulebook, or everyone chooses a class from the 5e Player’s Handbook. The character options in Beyond the Woods are balanced against each other, not the standard 5e character options, so there may be some imbalance when mixing and matching options.

How many pages are the books?
Each book will be between 160 and 192 pages, depending on what stretch goals we hit.

How do I pronounce…?
We want to share a bit of Irish with the world, so don’t worry, the Beyond the Woods Core Rulebook includes a pronunciation guide!

Can I use this with non-5e games?
Beyond the Woods is designed for 5e, but the setting, lore, and even adventures can be converted to be used with other systems.

What is BackerKit?
BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!
The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.
How does BackerKit work?
After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.
I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?
The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.
Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.
To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.
How do I update my shipping address?
BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.
When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?
That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.
I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?
As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
